TCL honors past board member, commissioner Gen. Arthur E. Brown Jr.
Longtime foundation board member, past commission chair and recently named S.C. Commissioner of the Year, Gen. Arthur E. Brown Jr. was honored at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in July for his many contributions to the college.
Brown, who was on hand for a foundation board meeting and reception, was recently named the 2021 Commissioner of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Technical College Commissioners (SCATCC). The annual award is given for “significant contributions in promoting the technical or community college concept,” according to a news release issued by the association.
In addition, Brown was named Chairman Emeritus of the commission at the board meeting.
Appointed by the governor, commissioners advocate for college needs and priorities at the state level.
A retired U.S. Army four-star general, Brown became involved with TCL in 1992 as a member of the TCL Foundation’s board of directors. He joined the TCL Area Commission in 1997 and served as vice-chairman and chairman over his 23 years as commissioner.
A West Point graduate, Brown’s military career spanned nearly 40-years. Before retiring from the Army in 1989 and moving to Hilton Head, Brown served as vice chief of staff.
The awards, announced in May, will be given in person at SCATCC’s annual commissioners’ academy in February of 2022.
